Save the Date! BioBlitz 2010 will be May 21–22
at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve.

Welcome

Since 1996, various organizations around the country have been doing BioBlitzes—from Washington to Central Park to Chicago.

On the surface, a BioBlitz seeks to quickly answer two simple questions: How many species are in an area, and what are their names? This is the most basic way in which we can describe biodiversity of an area, yet for most of the Earth's surface, we have no idea.

In this regard, a BioBlitz becomes a local metaphor for the larger, global biodiversity crisis. As BioBlitz scientists race against the clock to document as many species as they can in 24 hours in an urban park, so do biodiversity scientists around the globe race against the much more ominous clock of habitat destruction and climate change.

A BioBlitz is a 24-hour inventory of species found in a given area. BioBlitz creates awareness and appreciation of biodiversity in our region and beyond.

In 2008, scientists discovered over 1000 species in San Diego’s Balboa Park, including three previously unknown sites of fossils.

With family-friendly activities for both children as well as lifelong learners, the Museum’s BioBlitz at Mission Trails was an entertaining and educational experience for everyone involved.

At the Mission Trails Visitor Center, families and individuals of all ages were able to interact with the scientists as they documented and counted species. Visitors also viewed samples from the Museum’s 9-million specimen collection and participated in guided nature hikes of Mission Trails.

A final database of results is currently being compiled by Museum scientists and will be available soon.
